Political commentator Kurugu has questioned the relationship between former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and members of the Obidient movement, arguing that many of the politician’s supporters have never met him personally and may not possess significant material resources.
Kurugu made the remarks during a recent interview while discussing the movement that gained national prominence during the 2023 presidential election and the role its supporters continue to play in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Speaking during the interview, Kurugu stated, “Most of them have nothing and have never met His Excellency Peter Obi.”
His comment focused on the connection between Obi and the people who identify with his political ideals, raising questions about what motivates individuals to support a politician they may know primarily through public appearances, campaign messages and online engagement.
The Obidient movement became a prominent feature of Nigerian politics during the 2023 general election, when Obi attracted support from various sections of the electorate. The movement drew particular attention for its strong presence on social media and the participation of young people and other voters who advocated changes in leadership, governance and public accountability.
Since then, supporters associated with the movement have continued to participate in political discussions, express their views on national issues and engage in activities connected to Obi’s political ambitions. Their support has remained a subject of discussion as political parties and potential candidates position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kurugu’s remarks appear to challenge assumptions about the personal relationship between political leaders and their supporters. By suggesting that many Obidients have never met Obi and lack material resources, he questioned the nature of their connection to the former governor and the factors sustaining their commitment to his political cause.
However, political support does not necessarily depend on personal contact with a candidate or access to financial resources. Many people become involved in political movements because they identify with a candidate’s public positions, promises, leadership style or approach to national challenges.
Supporters may also participate because they believe a particular politician offers a better alternative to the existing political establishment. In such circumstances, shared expectations about economic development, employment, education, security and accountability can provide the basis for political mobilisation.
The Obidient movement’s visibility during the 2023 election demonstrated how supporters could use social media platforms and grassroots activities to promote a candidate and communicate political messages beyond traditional campaign structures.
At the same time, questions about the movement’s organisation, long-term political direction and ability to translate enthusiasm into electoral success have continued to feature in discussions about Nigeria’s opposition politics.
