BREAKING: SON unveils 80 standards for CNG vehicles

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has unveiled 80 standards to regulate the operation of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles and associated components.

Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, Director General of SON, announced in Abuja on Monday, as part of efforts to bolster safer, more dependable, and environmentally friendly energy solutions.

Dr. Okeke, while addressing the press, highlighted that the approval of these standards aligns with the objectives of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI). He elaborated that the 80 approved standards encompass a wide range of aspects of CNG usage, encompassing production, storage, transportation, and compatibility with appliances.

Emphasising the significance of these standards, Dr. Okeke underscored their role in facilitating safer CNG utilization, mitigating environmental impact, and generating cost savings. He further articulated that with an increasing number of road vehicles and appliances transitioning to CNG, Nigeria stands to enhance energy security and contribute to global sustainability objectives.

Michael Oluwagbemi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas, echoed Dr. Okeke’s sentiments. Oluwagbemi affirmed that the standards were meticulously crafted following global best practices.

He reassured that the federal government is committed to ensuring strict compliance with these standards among operators to uphold safety standards.
