Do not be deceived, the losers of June 2023 Senate President election are still angry

As per the SUN report, Borno State’s Mohammed Ali Ndume, the Chief Whip of the Senate, has taken a firm stand against several of the proposed legislative modifications, indicating possible difficulties in the coming weeks. In a recent interview, Ndume underlined the necessity of strengthening the Nigeria Police force currently in place in order to guarantee more efficient law enforcement throughout the nation. He expressed his personal opposition to the creation of state police and said he would vote against it in the Senate if it came up for consideration.

Ndume advocated for an increase in recruitment within the Nigeria Police, highlighting the current inadequacy of police personnel in relation to international standards. He expressed concerns that granting governors control over state police forces could lead to misuse of power and favoritism in allocating security personnel. Ndume’s position opposes the core reform advocated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the establishment of State Police as part of ongoing constitutional review efforts.

The recent contentious remarks made by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele have added another layer of discord within the Senate. Bamidele’s comments, deemed inappropriate for his leadership role, have exacerbated tensions within the legislative body. The potential fallout from these incidents and the necessary damage control strategies to be implemented in the ensuing days will be crucial in determining the Senate’s harmony and effectiveness going forward.
