Amidst fears that the All Progressive Congress might have a plan to Islamize Nigeria, the Vice President-elect, Senator Kashim Shettima has spoken out to allay such concerns. Speaking at a lecture in Abuja, Senator Shettima revealed that he had chosen an Igbo Catholic man to be his Chief Security Officer in response to these concerns.
Senator Shettima pointed out that his ticket with Tinubu was aimed at creating an inclusive environment that respects every tribe and religion. He also stated that Tinubu could not have any plan to Islamize Nigeria when his wife is a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. The Senator was however quick to add that allegations of an islamisation agenda were political tactics used by opposition groups to cause tension in the country.
Shettima noted that, despite being a Muslim, he deliberately picked an Igbo Catholic man as his CSO as an expression of his desire to have a government that represents the diversity of the country. He argued that politics is largely about perception, and that people who peddle such sentiments lack a genuine understanding of the intentions of the APC.
Finally, it is clear that the APC led government is not out to Islamize Nigeria. Senator Shettima and Tinubu have both demonstrated a commitment to creating a government that is inclusive and does not discriminate on the basis of religion or tribe.
